Welcome to Dorset Pier Mental Health

We are a private mental health clinic located in Thunder Bay, Ontario that focuses primarily on your comfort and well-being while incorporating trauma-informed, evidence-based practice. We recognize the strength it takes to seek counselling services; as such, we have ‘created’ a safe and comfortable space that utilizes that strength to encourage your own personal growth and development.

Dorset Pier Mental Health values the authentic use of space to cultivate opportunities for self-growth, determination, autonomy and development. We value meaningful and purposeful connection, client growth and creating a culture of respect and honesty.

What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor; more unashamed conversation

Dorset Pier

Dorset Pier Mental Health was named as an ode to Danielle Rider’s birth place. ‘Dorset’ captures the specific county in England that Danielle was born in, while “Pier” is a nod to the famous “Bournemouth Pier”, found in Danielle’s birth city. The picturesque coastline of Bournemouth, Dorset evokes feelings of calm, connectedness and a strong sense of ‘coming home’ that the staff at Dorset Pier wish to share with their clients.

For years, Danielle has attempted to capture the feelings she associates with these places and has failed to find the words to describe them, until her recent discovery of the concept of ‘hygge’. Hygge is a danish word which is about creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. Hygge focuses on comfort, contentment and well-being: all words that Danielle associates with her roots in England.

From its namesake to its physical environment, DPMH endeavors to share its values of comfort, connectedness, safety, nature and authenticity with any individual who shares in its space.
